www.acresource.co.uk  has over the last few months received a great deal of enquiries in relation to disposable refrigerant cylinders and the proposed minimum refrigerant handling qualification, both a requirement under EC Regulation 842/2006
The purpose of this update is to clearly and concisely explain the current situation and help eliminate rumours, hearsay and misleading information from certain refrigerant suppliers.

Disposable Refrigerant Cylinders
Under EC Regulation  842/2006 you cannot purchase a disposable refrigerant cylinder if the cylinder has been filled with refrigerant after July 2007. However, cylinders filled before July 2007 containing R134a can be sold and purchased by companies after this date.
You are able to purchase disposable refrigerant cylinders after July 2007 as long as the cylinder was manufactured before this date (July 2007). It is likely companies will continue to legally sell disposable cylinders after this date.

Minimum Refrigerant Handling Qualification
By 2010 all MAC technician's will need a recognised refrigerant handling qualification. Currently both the IMI and City & Guilds have MAC air conditioning qualifications. However neither can be 100% that these will meet the minimum criteria set down by the EU. It is anticipated by July 2007 the minimum EU requirements will be known. The expected timetable of events.
Date
Event
July 2007
EU will publish minimum handling requirements. Technicians working on MAC systems must have written confirmation of competence or a qualification listed on the DEFRA website.
NOTE: City & Guilds 2078 is not on the DEFRA list as a recognised MAC qualification. It is our understanding that this qualification is not for the Automotive sector.
July 2008
UK will have to adapt minimum requirements into existing qualifications
July 2010
All technicians need to be trained
Important - The minimum handling qualification requirements have now been published. IMI and City & Guilds are currently adapting their existing qualifications. Once this has been done and we have been notified we will let you know. Until that point we still recommend only an interim qualification is obtained.
